Company Profile
In 1989 Port City Marine Surveyors was asked to handle boat and yacht claims in Puerto Rico and Charleston, South Carolina after Hurricane Hugo and again in 1992 in Miami, Florida after Hurricane Andrew devastated the lower east coast of Florida. Port City Marine Surveyors handled over 700 claims and employed over 4 surveyors after Hurricane Andrew.

Port City Marine Surveyors later incorporated and became Port City Marine Services, Inc. and has handled boat and yacht claims in most disasters since Hurricane Hugo including the Lindhaven Marina Fire in Norfolk, Virginia, freeze losses from collapsed marinas in Seattle, Washington and the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. We handled boat and yacht claims for major underwriters during Hurricanes Hugo, Andrew, Opal, Ivan, Fran, Charlie, Wilma, Ike and over 1,200 claims after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 employing over 8 surveyors.

In addition to handling claims for underwriters, Port City Marine Services, Inc. has conducted pre-purchase surveys, condition and valuation surveys and appraisals on yacht, tugs and barges. We are appointed inspectors for the International Cargo Gear Bureau (ICGB) in the examination of cranes and cargo gear certification.

We have conducted cargo surveys in the Ports of Mobile, Biloxi, Pensacola and Panama City, Florida on various cargoes and products including, steel coils, paper products, and general bulk cargo.

Profile D.J. Smith

After serving in the U.S. Navy, D.J. Smith continued his service in the Maritime Industry sailing on Commercial Vessels and Dredges, and obtaining 100 Ton Captains Licenses for over three issues. D.J. Smith started Port City Marine Surveyors in 1985 while sailing on Tug Boats, Tankers and Sea Going Hopper Dredges and mentoring under a local surveyor whom was a retired US Coast Guard Vessel Inspector. He started PCMS in 1985 and has been surveying for over 25 years. D.J. Smith maintains membership in Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors® (SAMS®) as an Accredited Marine Surveyor® - #221 and in the International Association of Marine Investigators® (IAMI) as a Certified Marine Investigator - #00574-084. D.J. Smith served as Gulf Regional Director for Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors from 1995 - 1998.

D.J. Smith holds an Adjusters License from the State of Alabama.
